volunteers but not for adult literacy learners. The PD Fund covers PD activities for individuals and groups within the organization.

The PD opportunity must be directly related to the applicant’s responsibility within the community learning organization.
Sample Activities for Financial Support:
Attendance at conferences, workshops, or short courses (approximately 30 hours)
Travel and other expenses related to the PD opportunity
Facilitation of guest speakers (preferably large or regional audience opportunities)
The Committee will NOT approve for funding:
University/College courses
Applications not supported by direct supervisors

Original copies of expense receipts and a completed expense claim form

Eligibility
The Professional Development Committee will consider requests for funding that meet the following criteria:
The PD opportunity must be directly linked to the applicant’s job description(s).
The applicant(s) presents a plan for sharing with colleagues and/or students the knowledge or skills gained.
The applicant(s) agrees to present at possible future workshops related to the PD received.
The application is accompanied by a supporting email or signature from a direct supervisor.
Individuals may be funded to a maximum of $1000 per fiscal year. Preference will be given to individuals who have not received previous funding. This limit will not affect an individual’s participation in local or regional group PD opportunities.
Group PD activities may be funded to a maximum of $4000 per fiscal year for PD activities within their region.
Application/Funding Process
Applications must be submitted electronically and can be submitted at any time during the year, preferably at least two
months in advance of the event.
A completed application form, along with either a signature page or supporting email from a direct supervisor is submitted to the committee:
Literacy Nova Scotia
PO Box 1516,
Truro, NS B2N 5V2
Email: literacyns@nscc.ca
Fax: 902.897.4020
Applicants will be contacted by e-mail, upon receipt of the funding request. Once the committee has reviewed the application,
applicants will be notified via e-mail regarding the approval/denial of applications. It is important to give as much lead time as
possible when making requests. This will avoid disappointment. The PD Fund application must be submitted electronically. Final
approval will be given upon receipt of a faxed signature page.
The offer of approved funds is good only for the duration of the approved PD. If for any reason the PD is not completed during the approved
time frame, the money will revert back to the fund. A separate application is needed for each PD funding request.
Application Approval
The Professional Development Committee will base decisions for either total or partial funding on:
The quality of the application with respect to the eligibility requirements
The cost of the opportunity
The current status of the PD fund
The number of applications for the same opportunity
The Application Form will:
Include details of registration fees, travel, meals, accommodations, and miscellaneous costs.
Miscellaneous costs include but are not limited to supplies and materials associated with the event.
Disclose other sources of funding (i.e. personal financial contribution, other grants, and employer sponsorship).
Include justification.
Include a summary of the knowledge sharing plan
